I’m Kathy Kremer, rural community sociologist and Grand Haven Township resident, and this blog reports my adventures on Grand River Expedition 2010. This decennial Expedition draws important attention to the Grand and its watershed, with participants completing tests to monitor river condition and education programs in communities along the way.
As a rural community sociologist and Associate Professor at Aquinas College, I’m passionate about stewardship of resources like the Grand River Watershed. And, I would be dishonest if I didn’t admit that 20+ mile days in my kayak, 11 portages, and 13 nights of tenting with total strangers and elusive showering facilities meets my mid-life needs. So as soon as I heard about this opportunity I knew I had to participate in both the planning and the Expedition.
So, here’s what you can expect to find in the coming weeks. Between now and July 14th I’ll provide updates on my trip planning, news from the Expedition, and interviews with some of the nearly 200 people currently registered for all or some of the trip.
And then the fun begins! From the opening ceremony in Liberty Township on July 14 to our arrival in Grand Haven on July 26 I’ll provide news from the water, photos, and video. I also look forward to your questions and comments before, during, and after the Expedition.
